Teeth Grinding/Bruxism
Teeth grinding – also known as bruxism – is a common condition in which a person clenches or grinds their teeth, often unconsciously. It can occur during the day or at night while sleeping. Since nighttime grinding happens without awareness, many patients only discover the issue after a partner hears the grinding sounds or a dentist notices signs of wear on the teeth.
Bruxism is frequently linked to stress, but can also be associated with sleep disorders, an uneven bite, or missing teeth. Over time, constant grinding and clenching can place excessive pressure on the teeth and jaw muscles, leading to enamel wear, chipped or cracked teeth, tooth sensitivity, gum recession, jaw pain, tension headaches, and even temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discomfort.
One of the most effective and conservative treatments for bruxism is a custom-fitted night guard. A night guard is a comfortable oral appliance worn over the teeth while you sleep. It acts as a protective barrier, cushioning the teeth from the forces of grinding and helping to reduce strain on the jaw muscles and joints.
Our office can fabricate a custom night guard for you specifically molded to your bite for optimal comfort, durability, and protection. Unlike over-the-counter options, professionally made night guards offer a precise fit that helps ensure proper jaw alignment and long-term effectiveness.
