Extractions
While our goal is always to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible, there are times when removing a tooth is the best option to protect your overall oral health. If you need an extraction, our team provides gentle, comfortable care with a focus on minimizing discomfort and supporting a smooth recovery.
When is a tooth extraction necessary?
A tooth may need to be removed if it is:
- Severely decayed or damaged beyond repair
- Advanced gum disease has loosened the tooth
- Cracked below the gumline
- Causing crowding before orthodontic treatment
- Impacted, such as wisdom teeth
- Infected and not responding to other treatment
We always explore restorative options first before recommending extraction. Your dentist will discuss all your options with you.
Aftercare and Recovery
Most patients recover within a few days. To promote proper healing:
- Bite gently on gauze as directed
- Avoid smoking or using straws for several days
- Eat soft foods and avoid chewing near the extraction site
- Keep the area clean but avoid vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours
- After the first 24 hours, rinse mouth gently every 3-4 hours with 1/4 teaspoon of salt in warm water
- Apply an ice pack to the area to keep swelling to a minimum
Some mild swelling and discomfort are normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications. If pain or swelling persists, please contact us.
